Therapy Style:

My approach as a therapist is warm, engaging, interactive and respectful. In my years of practice, I have amassed a wealth of skills, experience and clinical sophistication. My approach is eclectic with a solid foundation in psychodynamic theory — our history is what shapes who we are today and it is difficult to make lasting changes without recognizing underlying patterns of behavior. Even more important than my approach or experience, however, is who I am as a person and how that may impact your progress in therapy. The most important trait that a therapist can possess is a capacity for healthy relatedness, because it is in the context of a relationship that mental and emotional healing occurs. I bring an easy smile,a curious, friendly manner, a ready laugh, and a healthy self into the therapy room. These are some of my greatest attributes as a therapist.

Why I'm inspired by my work:

I find human beings to be endlessly fascinating: complex amalgams of all kinds of qualities, good and bad. There is no human characteristic which does not have two sides to it. My life is greatly enhanced by my professional practice and I am grateful to have the opportunity to explore and enrich the lives of so many interesting people.

The initial consultation:

Therapy can only work well if there is a good "fit" between client and therapist. Therefore I schedule an initial consultation with each prospective client to assess the potential for a good working relationship. In this session we can also discuss our expectations about the therapy, including fees, the length of treatment, etc. For an appointment, please call me at (650) 342-4535 or write at hilary@hilaryrobison.com.

I do not accept most health insurance. However if your health insurance carrier allows you to choose an out-of-pocket provider, usually a PPO plan, I would be happy to provide you with a statement so that you can seek reimbursement. Please call me to discuss my current fee. I do offer a limited number of sliding scale appointments based on income and the ability to pay. These lower fee appointments are available only in the hours between 10am and 3pm.
