The central task of early adulthood is to choose a life course. For most of us, this usually means finding a career that is emotionally and financially rewarding, and finding a healthy and satisfying love relationship. These are complex and complicated undertakings, and given the sheer number of choices in our modern age, often take much more time than we think they should. It can feel very overwhelming to feel as though the choices you are making today will be affecting the rest of your life.

Sometimes the ability to make these choices is hampered by fear: fear of failure; of not living up to one's own expectations; of not living up to one's parents' expectations; or even of succeeding beyond one's wildest dreams!
