Despite the cultural assumptions of lying on a Hawaiian beach with a Mai Tai or playing endless rounds of golf, for many people in their "golden years", retirement signifies an opportunity to break with social norms and do something really different. There is often a loss of interest in simple success and an increasing focus on the significance and meaning of what has already been accomplished.

One of the central tasks at this time of life is to reach a state of integrity, or integration. This can be experienced as a need for balance: the integration of all the different roles and serial identities that have served us in the previous years. What is the essence of ourselves that we want to leave behind?
